01 · The duplicate

Four steps at the county clerk.

  1. 1Apply at your county clerk. In person or by mail, on Tennessee’s Application for Noting of Lien, Duplicate Title (RV-F1315201). Bring a photo ID.
  2. 2Show the loan was paid off.If the car ever had a loan, Tennessee asks for proof that the lien was released.
  3. 3Pay the state fee.Your county clerk tells you the current amount, including any county fee.
  4. 4Then it’s a title-in-hand sale.Three forms, your duplicate title, about fifteen minutes.

Still owe on it? Tennessee only issues a duplicate to the lender while a lien is on record. Then you don’t need the title at all: we pay your lender and they release it to us. The loan guide →
